Familiar versus unique “Voice”

Greetings! I’m curious if there is a current trend in selecting voice over talent for TV, news, sports and other media content. Is “familiarity” or “uniqueness” more important? Also, with the passing of the legendary voice of movie trailers and television promos, Don LaFontaine, will there be more or less of an inclination to fill that void or move beyond the “movie trailer” brand he created?
